Well, not quite - DCI is a standard, whereas this post is in preparation for my home studio. One of the most pressing questions is, surprisingly, the color. Now, there are at least thee aspects to it: 1) producing color accurate work, 2) viewing color accurate work and 3) not living in a cave. Surprisingly, the last is perhaps the hardest thing since it stands in conflict with the rest.
To clarify, here are visualizations of the Munsell colors N8 and N7:

Try to imagine yourself sitting in a room made of either of those grays. But before we get deeper into this, which one of the shades should I be talking about? N7 or N8? For print, it seems to be the N8.Â
It is somewhat curious that the wall paints are not often mentioned in any detail. The Digital Intermediate guides only mention turning off all the lights. People say little other than that it should be neutral. All the mentions of N8 seems to be from press people. ISO standard does not take the paints into account, only the wall reflectivity.
So, choose the one you prefer, and paint the walls and the ceiling, and in principle any surface that reflects light elsewhere to the room. I’ll probably go with the darker tone so that the room doesn’t look too bland.
